(BLOOMINGTON) - A woman was rescued from deep inside a cave by a group of rescue specialists in western Monroe County early Sunday morning.

The incident began at approximately 3:30 p.m. Saturday when the unidentified woman slipped and fell, dislocating her shoulder approximately 1500 feet into the well-known Buckner Cave.

Nearly six hours later, two of the injured woman's companions made it out of the cave and called for assistance. They had become disoriented trying to find their way out according to Anmar Mirza, who led the rescue effort. One member of the exploring group stayed with the injured woman.

Initially, the Van Buren Township Fire Department responded to the scene. It was later decided to call in a local cave rescue team.

The team of nine cave rescue specialists and two IU Health ambulance crew members entered the cave at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday. The injured woman--escorted by her rescuers - reached the cave entrance at approximately 1:15 a.m. Sunday - nearly ten hours after her ordeal began. She was transported to IU Health Hospital. Her condition is unknown.
