(BEDFORD) - A Bedford woman escaped injury after she and her dog fell 60 feet into a quarry located near Foote's Tomb off D Street.

Bedford Police were alerted to the incident at 10:08 p.m. after receiving a report from a resident in the area hearing someone yelling for help.

Officers and the caller then looked around the area trying to locate who was yelling and found the woman and dog in the quarry.

The Department of Natural Resources, Bedford Fire Department and an IU Health Hospital ambulance crew were then called to help.

According to Bedford Fire Department Chief Jon Wagner, the 50-year-old woman had been chasing her dog in the dark when the dog and her both fell.

He did not have the woman's name and is not sure why the woman was chasing the dog.

"They fell about 60 feet," he added. "It was a quest to get them both out. The police department went and purchased a rubber raft with EMT's waded waist-deep mud and walked along the edge of the rocks to get down to her."

While EMTs were scaling the rock ledge to get to the woman, firefighters launched the raft to get to her by water.

"Once the EMTs got to her they were able to assist her into getting into the raft," Wagner added. "Once she was safe they all went after the dog."

The woman was not injured and refused to be taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation.

"It is unbelievable that she fell 60 feet into an old quarry and came out unscathed," Wagner says. "The dog didn't fair so well."

Wagner says the dog was in pretty bad shape with a possible fractured hip.

"We are not sure how the dog is doing," he added.
