(CRANE) - Today, U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly announced that he will host U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Crane on Wednesday, June 22.

Carter will be the first Secretary of Defense to visit Crane.

"I am honored to host Secretary Carter in Indiana. With Crane's impressive growth in the past two years, I wanted Secretary Carter to see the base firsthand and meet these extraordinary Hoosiers who play a critical role in protecting our national security," says Donnelly, who serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee said,

NSA Crane is the third-largest U.S. Navy installation in the world with an annual business base of approximately $2 billion and is celebrating 75 years of service.

The visit will focus on the capabilities of the base's Naval Surface Warfare Center, which is home to numerous research laboratories, testing facilities, and cutting-edge technology development centers.

With nearly 3,700 civilian employees and 1,700 contractors, NSA Crane is one of Indiana's largest employers.

"We thank Senator Donnelly for hosting Secretary Carter at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane (NSWC Crane)," says Captain JT Elder, Commanding Officer of NSWC Crane. " This is a magnificent opportunity to showcase the technical depth and expertise that resides in southwest Indiana. NSWC Crane offers an increasingly youthful and highly educated workforce providing the Navy cutting-edge, rapid innovative solutions while being focused, agile and the go-to problem solvers for the nation's most complex issues and threats."
