Toddler Points Handgun At Maintenance Men

Last updated on Wednesday, June 22, 2016

(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington police are investigating an incident where a toddler was found with a handgun inside of an apartment.

Police were called to the apartment in the 1000 block of South Basswood Circle at 10:20 p.m. after two maintenance men told police they were confronted by a 1-year-old with a 9mm Glock handgun.

According to Bloomington Police Sgt. Joe Crider, the men were at the apartment to fix a pipe when the toddler climbed on a dining room counter, tucked an item under his arm and climbed down.

The boy then reportedly pointed the handgun at one of the men.

The men took the gun away from the toddler and called police.

The boy's father, who was home with the boy, told police he keeps the gun in a bedroom dresser, and he accused the men of removing the baby gate that keeps the child away from the room.

The maintenance men denied moving any baby gates.

Bloomington police sent case reports to the Monroe County Prosecutor's Office for review. Officials from Indiana's Department of Child Services were also contacted.
