Relay For Life Event Saturday At Parkview Track

Last updated on Thursday, June 16, 2016

(BEDFORD) - The American Cancer Society Relay For Life - ‘Lights. Camera. Cure!’ - is Saturday at Parkview Track.

The event will kick off at 4 p.m. and end at Midnight.

Radio personality Rick St. Nick with Super Oldies 105.5 WQRK will broadcast live from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m.

Each themed lap will allow those participating to win great prizes like Indiana Beach, Cedar Point and Kentucky Kingdom tickets and other prizes.

You don't have to be a walker or a runner to participate - Just come celebrate life!

This year's survivor lap will be led by the youngest grand marshal - 2-year-old Harper Howell.

In December 2015, Howell, the daughter of James and Brandy Howell was diagnosed with Horner Syndrome. Horner syndrome is a combination of signs and symptoms caused by the disruption of a nerve pathway from the brain to the face and eye on one side of the body. Typically, Horner syndrome results in a decreased pupil size, a drooping eyelid and decreased sweating on the affected side of your face. On Christmas Eve they learned the doctors had found a mass at the top of her right lung. That mass was removed on Jan. 22.

A biopsy of the mass indicated it was malignant and was a neuroblastoma. In February, Harper had additional tests, which came back negative for cancer cells. Doctors will continue to monitor Harperl every three months for any changes.

On Saturday, those that attend the event will celebrate people like Harper who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight once and for all.

As of Monday, 22 teams and 255 participants have raised $23,459.61. The fundraising goal is $40,000. You can register online at www.relayforlife.org/lawrencecountyin as a participant only or you can join a team.

Each luminaria is personalized with a name, photo, message or drawing in memory or honor of a friend or loved one who has been affected by cancer. Luminaria can also be dedicated in support of a Relay participant.
