Police Looking For Suspect Or Suspects Who Set Hay Bales On Fire

(SPRINGVILLE) - Lawrence County Police are looking for an arson suspect or suspects that set multiple hay bale on fires in field at Springville Judah Road and Cobb Lane Sunday.

At 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department firefighters were called to a hay bale fire, according to a press release from the fire department. Firefighters were at the scene until 5 a.m. to control the fire and move hay bales with a tractor.

"We found a large sports drink bottle that had been emptied of gasoline," the release says.

The area was checked periodically overnight and was considered extinguished.

Then at 1 p.m. Sunday, Perry Township VFD were called back to the field again to extinguish the burning bales.

Firefighters pulled the hay bales apart to get to the core of the fire. Firefighters say someone purposely re-lit the fire.

At 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Perry Township responded to more hay bales on fire in the same field, according to the release.

More than 40 firefighters and 15 trucks from multiple fire departments -- Marshall, Indian Creek, Pleasant Run, Shawswick townships and Huron, Williams and Oolitic VFDs -- battled the blaze. Firefighters didn't leave the scene until about 2 a.m. Monday.

Firefighters say someone poured gasoline onto five of the bales.

At 4:30 a.m. Monday, Perry Township VFD responded to a fourth hay bale fire,and were on the scene until 10 a.m.
