(BLOOMINGTON) - A 19-year old male inmate at the Monroe County Jail died Tuesday night after he collapsed after what police are saying was a “medical event.”
Clinton Gilkie of Bloomington was housed in the Recovery Dormitory at the Monroe County Correctional center. The dormitory houses inmates who are participating in programs focused on substance abuse and life skills, according to a press release from Capt. Ryan Davis of the Monroe County Sheriff's office.
After collapsing, Gilkie was taken to IU Health Hospital Bloomington, where he died a short time later.
Gilkie, who was arrested for armed robbery as a juvenile in September 2014, had no disciplinary or misconduct issues during his time at the jail. In fact, the recovery program he was participating in is "targeted to men who have the best chance at improving themselves after release from incarceration, with continuing support when they are in the community," according to the press release.
A preliminary review of the jail's security video shows no violence or significant event prior to Gilkie's collapse, though preliminary investigations have shown Gilkie to have existing medical issues, the release stated.
An autopsy was performed at Terre Haute Regional Hospital this morning.
