Dr. George Sorrells Named Grand Marshal Of Springville Festival Parade

Last updated on Monday, June 13, 2016

(SPRINGVILLE) - Dr. George Sorrells is this year’s Springville Heritage Festival Parade Grand Marshall.

The longtime pediatrician has practiced medicine in Lawrence County for more than 51 years. Earlier this month, Dr. Sorrells, a 1962 graduate of Indiana University, received the Community Physician Award from the Indiana University School of Medicine.

He started his practice at Dunn Memorial Hospital and a few years later was among the group of doctors that founded the Bedford Medical Center, now Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital, in 1970. Several years ago, he joined Southern Indiana Pediatrics, a group practice at 1614 25th St. that is now part of Riley Hospital Physicians.

The parade committee chose Dr. Sorrells because of his dedication to his patients and families. He is accessible to his patients anytime day or night and will accept calls at his home and make trips to his office at all hours to see a sick patient. He has no plans of retiring.

He says he has been blessed to have an understanding wife in Barbara who never complained about his long hours, when he took phone calls at home from patients or had to leave to attend to a sick child.

When not tending to patients, Sorrells is happy at home on his small farm south of Bedford.

Dr. Sorrells will step off the parade "200 Years of Indiana Heritage," Saturday at 4 p.m. right after the Springville Choir sings 'On the Banks of the Wabash.'

Funds raised at the festival help support the Springville park as well as the Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department.
There will be a parade, community-wide yard sale, live music, baby contest, food trucks and new this year will be an open-air market of vendors who create handmade items.

Activities kick off at 6 p.m. Friday, and finish with a bang with a fireworks display at dusk on Saturday.
