(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington Police have arrested 33-year-old Robierre McNeil on charges of aggravated battery and neglect of a dependent resulting in death. He is currently in the Monroe County Jail, being held as prosecutors review the case before filing formal charges.

According to Bloomington Police Captain Steven Kellams, police were called to McNeil's home in the 100 block of South Curry Pike on Sunday at 4:45 p.m. after a report of an unresponsive infant.

The 2-month-old female was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital, where she later died.

According to police, the child's mother had given the baby a bottle at 7:45 a.m. and then left for work. The baby had been in her father's care all day.

McNeil reported that he checked on the child at 4:45 p.m. and found her unresponsive and called for help.

"The father was the only one that had access to the child during the day," Kellams added.

Detectives with the Bloomington Police Department began an investigation into the death.

Preliminary autopsy results showed the baby died of two skull fractures as a result of blunt force trauma.

"The medical examiner as well as independent physicians reported that that type of injury would've resulted in some kind of immediate response by that child. It is not reasonable to assume that he would not have known something happened," Kellams says.

Police then interviewed McNeil.

"He denied any knowledge of how the child might have received her injuries and his statements were inconsistent with the evidence gathered in the investigation," Kellams says.

Police say McNeil is refusing to cooperate with police.

McNeil pleaded guilty to child molesting in 2011 and was released after serving a year on the charge in the Monroe County Jail. McNeil is registered as a sex offender.
