(BLOOMINGTON) - On Sunday, July 3, at 6:30 pm, the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra will perform a free concert in Bryan Park as part of the City of Bloomington's Performing Arts Series.

Audience members are encouraged to bring a blanket and a picnic, then sit back and enjoy patriotic favorites and music from the movies.

A grant from the Bloomington Arts Commission allowed the BSO to hire local composer Ben Taylor to write "Fanfare and Celebration," a light-hearted piece that fits well with the rest of the popular music on the program. Guest conductor Dan Whisler will lead the orchestra as they perform music from Star Wars, The Fellowship of the Ring, plus Sousa marches and other family favorites.

Local music lover Karima can't get enough of the BSO and its programs - "I love listening to the BSO. Their programs always teach me something, and they choose great music. Wouldn't dream of missing this concert!"

Long-time sponsor Smithville Communications is once again making the BSO's Summer Concert possible. The BSO also receives support from the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.

About The Bloomington Symphony Orchestra:

The all-volunteer Bloomington Symphony Orchestra performs eight concerts per season. From light-hearted holiday pops shows and children's concerts to the great masterpieces of orchestral music, their programs educate, enlighten, and entertain audiences of every age and background. Reviewer Peter Jacobi of the Herald-Times calls the BSO "a gift to the community."
