Last updated on Monday, May 16, 2016

(JACKSON CO) - Two were injured after the boat they were in struck a boat dock on Friday night.

According to an Indiana Conservation officers report, the accident happened on a private lake at the Land and Forest Club in Jackson County Friday night.

According to police, 24-year-old Joshua Smith of Greenwood suffered life-threatening injuries. His passenger, 23-year-old Bridget Smith of Clayton (who is not related to Joshua), suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Police say that just before 8:30 p.m., witnesses saw Joshua Smith driving the personal watercraft at a high-rate of speed with Bridget seated at the rear. The watercraft struck a dock and both occupants were ejected. Joshua was knocked unconscious during the incident.

Neighbors who heard or witnessed the collision, including a medical doctor, quickly rushed to the scene and rendered aid to Joshua, who was found floating face-down and unresponsive in the water. Both were airlifted to local hospitals with multiple injuries.

Alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor; the incident remains under investigation by Indiana Conservation Officers.

Assisting agencies at the scene included Jackson County EMS, the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, and Brownstown City Police.
