(ORLEANS) - The social studies squad of the Orleans High School Academic Team has earned a spot in the state finals at Purdue University.

The OHS scholars placed first at the area competition with a score of 21 to lead all 71 Class 4 schools statewide. The social studies round will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday in the Loeb Playhouse on the Purdue campus.

"I am so impressed with the enthusiasm and dedication that these students have for learning the material. They started reading and preparing in November and are still going strong. This competition is set up to be very difficult and challenging, but these kids have consistently outscored not only the Class 4 schools, but also the schools with much larger enrollments," said Coach Kristina Hole.

The Orleans English team also received first place honors at the area contest at Austin High School, finished seventh statewide, and missed going to the finals on a tieĀbreaker. The science team (eighth in the state) and interdisciplinary teams placed second, the fine arts team third, and the math team finished in fourth place at the area competition.

More than 5,100 high school students from 279 schools competed in the 30th Indiana Academic Super Bowl at various host sites around the state. The theme of this year's competition is "Hoosier Heritage," and competition outlines focus entirely on Indiana history as well as scientists, artists, composers and authors with Indiana roots. As a part of Indiana's Bicentennial celebration, the Indiana Academic Super Bowl was selected as an official "Legacy Project" by the Indiana Bicentennial Commission.
