Milwaukee Depot Will Be Moved Wednesday

Last updated on Thursday, May 12, 2016

(BEDFORD) - Dan Kirk, plan director for the city of Bedford, says the Milwaukee depot will be moved on Wednesday, rain or shine.

The depot project is part of the city of Bedford's Stellar Communities grant. The limestone building, which opened in 1900, is 130 feet long and weighs 350 tons. A Wolfe employee will direct the moving using a wireless, radio remote control system.

"We had to reschedule the move twice because of rain," says Kirk. "It seems it rains everyday so we have decided to move ahead with the move."

Crews will move the depot to the edge of the street on Tuesday in preparation of the move on Wednesday.

It will take a couple of days to move the depot to a lot at 14th and J streets that is about 1,200 feet south of its current site.

J street will be closed to traffic beginning Wednesday. Homes and businesses may be affected by temporary power outages during the move.

"We will only be letting local traffic through," Kirk added. "The road will be completely closed on 10th Street. The streets will remain closed for a couple of days. It will take two days to move the depot. On the third day they will place it on its foundation at the new location."

The public is welcome to watch as crews move the depot.

"We will have officers in the area," Kirk added. "Residents can park on the side streets and walk down to the location, we just ask that they stay a safe distance away."

Employees of Wolfe have been busy prepping the building for the move. Holes were cut in the foundation to allow beams to be placed underneath. Those beams will provide bracing and support for the move. Earlier this week, the depot was lifted about five feet off its foundation. Once the depot is placed on its new foundation, Tri-County Builders will resume work on the interior. The project will be completed by November.
