Leading Educator On Dementia To Speak At Friday Evening Seminar

Last updated on Tuesday, May 17, 2016

(BLOOMINGTON) - IU Health Bloomington Hospital hosts Teepa Snow as part of 2016 Creative Aging Festival.

With an accent, humor and a powerful voice, expert Teepa Snow makes her living teaching caregivers - both family and professional - how to best help those with dementia.

The free event will be held at Wegmiller Auditorium at IU Health Bloomington Hospital from 6 p.m. till 7 p.m. No registration required. Parking with elevators - free in the parking garage.

Barbara Haley, Behavioral Health and Geriatric Clinical Nurse Specialist at IU Health Bloomington Hospital, has seen her talent first-hand.

"I've seen her twice and I would see her five more times," Haley says. "The things she does are just amazing from the healthcare perspective.

She engages the crowd; she simulates what a patient with dementia would be going through, helping you step into their shoes, getting to their level so you can understand," Haley adds. "She has a science behind her methods, but then she explains what is going on from the perspective of the patient."

The advocate for dementia patients will be the guest of IU Health Bloomington Hospital on Friday, for professional training and will be the guest speaker for a free public seminar in Wegmiller Auditorium that evening.

Her personal mission is to help others better understand how it feels to be living with dementia. She utilizes her gifts of role play to demonstrate behavioral states and stages of dementia. This results in greater understanding for her audiences.

Her seminar is part of the 2016 Creative Aging Festival, sponsored by Indiana University Health and The Center on Aging and Community at Indiana University.

Snow uses a training model based on her trademarked program, "Positive Approach to Care," that teaches caregivers how to neutralize situations through agreement instead of disagreement.

An occupational therapist by trade, Snow graduated from Duke University and has a master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has over 35 years of clinical experience in the field of geriatrics and dementia care.

Currently, she has an independent practice as well as clinical appointments with Duke University's School of Nursing and UNC-CH School of Medicine.

Snow founded Positive Approach, LLC in 2006 and offers person-centered training opportunities throughout
the world.
