(SALEM) - The IRS scam in which several residents have been targeted recently has just taken an ugly turn.
Washington County Sheriff's Department Captain Brent Miller says two residents on Wednesday received calls from someone posing as a local police officer.
The caller identified himself as Officer Ryan Larrimore with the Washington County Sheriff's Department, and told the resident he had a federal warrant for his arrest. The resident believed the caller.
He was told to get a debit card and put the money on it, then give those numbers to the supposed IRS representative and allowed them to take $1,000 from his account.
The second person did not hand over any money.
Miller said Officer Larrimore actually called the number and when the man on the other end answered, that man identified himself as Officer Ryan Larrimore with the sheriff's department. Larrimore pretended to be a victim and asked particulars about how to get the money to pay off his bill. However, the scammer figured out that this wasn't a real victim and hung up.
Miller says the calls were placed from a pre-paid phone which police can't track.
Miller says "under no circumstances" does the sheriff's department does not call people and ask for money over the phone. Should you receive a call, police say hang up. if you have any doubts, call the sheriff's department at (812) 883o-5999.
The IRS will NEVER call your home and threaten arrest for taxes.
