(BROWN CO.) - The Hoosier Mountain Bike Association is applying for a federal grant to build more trails in Brown County State Park.
HMBA President Paul Arlinghaus said the group is seeking more than $100,000 from the Federal Highway Administration's Recreational Trails Program.
The money will go toward the Weed Patch trail, which will connect multiple existing trails in the state park to make them more accessible to non-expert riders, and to the Limekiln return loop, which connects to the state park's campground.
The HMBA has to provide a 20 percent match for the federal grant money, either through volunteer hours or cash donation, Arlinghaus said.
Those who want to build or ride Brown County's trails can find out more at hmba.org or by looking up "Brown County Mountain Bike Riders" and "Yellowwood State Forest Bike Trails" on Facebook.
The HMBA is about 75 percent finished with the Bobcat Loop in the state park and hopes to have it completed by the end of summer, Arlinghaus said.
In addition, volunteers are continuing to work on the Hobbs Hollow flow trail in the state park and the Crooked Creek trail in Yellowwood State Forest.
