Fourth Annual Ugly Duck Derby Is Saturday, Still Time To Purchase Ducks

Last updated on Tuesday, May 24, 2016

(BEDFORD) - The Fourth Annual Ugly Duck Derby is Saturday, May 28 at 6 p.m. at Thornton Park’s John Lowery Pool.

The proceeds from the Ugly Duck Derby benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County and tickets are on sale now.

The evening kicks off with the Celebrity Belly Buster Contest at 6 p.m. followed by 10,000 ducks racing down the water slide.

The first duck to cross the finish line will win its owner a 2 year car lease of a 2016 Ford Focus provided by Bedford Ford. The winner can choose $3,000 cash instead of the car lease.

After the first race, the finals of the Belly Buster contest will be held and then an inflatable relay race between members of the Bedford North Lawrence girls and boys basketball teams will take place.

This year's lineup features Belly Busters P.J. Granger, who appeared on "American Ninja Warrior"; Noah Browning, Blaine Parker of the Bedford Chamber; Derek George; Teresa Underwood, principal of St. Vincent Catholic School and Camille Westmoland, resource development director for the club.

New this year is a race at the end of the night that is limited to just 100 ducks. These ducks cost $100 each.

The winning duck of this race will win their choice of a 2016 4-wheeler from M&E Honda or $2,500 cash.

Ducks will also be sold at Lowery Pool up until the ducks are dumped in the water. Ducks can be purchased for $5 for 1 duck, 5 for $20, or buy a flock of 13 for $50. Ducks can be purchased at the Bedford Parks Department, Super Oldies 105.5 WQRK on Heltonville Road, the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County, Bailey's Flowers, at M & E Honda, or from any duck committee member.

All of the ducks that are sold are gathered up and taken to the top of the pool slide. After being released from the top of the slide, winning ducks are plucked from the pool as they cross a finish line.

The first duck will win a two-year lease on a Ford Focus (or $3,000 cash option) donated by Bedford Ford Lincoln Mercury.

Other prizes include Indianapolis Colts football tickets, two sets of Indiana University football tickets, a pair of Coach sunglasses, limestone bench, a free pizza per month for a year from Papa John's, personal training and nutrition counseling and weekly check-ins from Foundation Fitness and a 1-hour massage from Quest Chiropractic. The last duck plucked from the water is worth a trip to Branson, Mo.
