Federal Grand Jury Indicts Bloomington Man On Five Federal Bank Robbery Charges

Last updated on Wednesday, May 11, 2016

(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington man charged in February with robbing two banks in Columbus is now accused of robbing three more - two in Bloomington and one in Terre Haute.

The Herald Times reports that a federal grand jury has indicted 49-year-old Stephen M. Lee of Bloomington on five federal bank robbery charges.

He had been incarcerated at the Bartholomew County Jail on $300,000 bond in connection with the two Columbus robberies since his arrest during a traffic stop in Bloomington around 2 a.m. February 17.

Bloomington Police arrested Lee about 12 hours after the Main Source Bank at 529 Washington Street in Columbus was robbed.

Columbus police arrived at the bank around 1:30 p.m. February 16 after a man with gun walked in and handed a note to the teller demanding money.

The Lee got away with some cash, and police released surveillance images of the crime.

Police tracked Lee to Bloomington and received assistance from the Bloomington Police Department SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiators to execute a search warrant at a home in the 3700 block of Mesa Drive.

Lee was taken into custody around 2:30 a.m. February 17 on two counts of armed robbery. He was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail.

Police say Lee may also be responsible for a second robbery in Columbus at the Jackson County Bank on November 2, 2015.
