(BLOOMINGTON) - The first water testing results after new treatment changes were implemented at the water treatment plant on April 4, reveal lower levels of disinfectant byproducts in our distribution system and in our wholesale water providers' systems.

April testing results revealed HAA5 levels between 28 and 34 ug/l and TTHM levels between 28.6 and 34.0 ug/l, which shows significant improvement from March's results of 52 and 60 ug/l for HAA5s and 46.3 and 53.5 ug/l for TTHMs.

As promised in January during the initial discussion of water quality issues, the City of Bloomington Utilities Department (CBU) has gone from quarterly to monthly testing for disinfection byproducts (DBPs). CBU will continue to use to use a nationally recognized and independent laboratory to analyze DBPs on a monthly basis.

The Utilities staff continues monitor the treatment changes, testing results and to evaluate long-term options and solutions to minimize DBP formation. DBP formation can vary seasonally and the staff is committed to implementing further treatment changes for summer and fall water conditions.

"While it is too early to know that the changes made at the treatment facility and in the delivery system will continue to produce encouraging test results, we remain committed to providing our customers with safe drinking water and water quality updates," commented Mayor John Hamilton.
