Bloomfield Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Earns Top Award

Last updated on Tuesday, May 3, 2016

(BLOOMFIELD) - The Bloomfield School District Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps is one of the top eight units in Area Three.

This year's unit is led by Cadet Company Commander Kyle Vaught and Cadet Executive Officer Kylie Roach.

For its efforts, Bloomfield's NJROTC will receive a Distinguished Unit Award with Honors, a remarkable achievement for such a small school.

"Many of the schools Bloomfield was compared with in Area Three are much larger Class 3A, 4A or 5A schools with large numbers of cadets and tremendous resources," said David Hultberg, USN Chief Petty Officer (Ret) and Naval Science Instructor. "Our cadets worked very hard this last year volunteering over 1500 community service hours (52 hours per cadet on average), had a 90 percent participation rate, and fielded a team in every area of completion available to us (Air rifle, orienteering, color guard, armed and unarmed regulation, and exhibition military drill, STEM academics and physical fitness)."

Hultberg cites strong support from cadets' families, school administration and many local businesses and organizations as a crucial component of the team's success.
