Bedford Man Arrested After Found Staggering Along U.S. 50 East

Last updated on Monday, May 16, 2016

(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man was arrested after police found him staggering along the side of U.S. 50 East and Maple Leaf Road.

According to Lawrence County Chief Deputy Aaron Shoults, officers stopped 51-year-old Lester Grant along the side of the highway on Saturday afternoon.

When officers approached Grant he became uncooperative. When he was asked for his identification he threw his wallet in the grass and walked away from officers. He then had to be physically restrained.

"Mr. Grant then began hitting his head against the hood of the patrol car and had to be restrained once again," Shoults added. "He was handcuffed and placed inside of a patrol car so the officers could get him and themselves off the highway and to a safer location.:

Officers determined that Grant may have taken prescription medication, based upon his statements and a white paste-like substance found along the edge of his mouth, accounting for Grants staggering, slurred speech and demeanor.

He was arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct and taken to jail.
