Last updated on Monday, May 16, 2016

(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man was arrested after a report of a domestic fight over a television at a home in the 3800 block of Leatherwood Road on Sunday.

Lawrence County Police officers were called to the home at 2:55 p.m. when 32-year-old Tyler Collins reported that his ex-girlfriend had stolen his television, hit him with a hammer and bit him.

At the same time the woman's father called police to report that his daughter had been hit by Collins and that Collins had taken a hammer and smashed the back window of a vehicle.

When police arrived the woman was picking up her personal property and moving from the home, according to Chief Deputy Aaron Shoults.

"A dispute over a flat-screen TV resulted in the physical altercation," Shoults says. "During the altercation Mr. Collins obtained a hammer and broke out the victim's car window in an attempt to get the TV."

Shoults says Collins then put the woman in a headlock and restrained her on the ground. He choked the woman and also slapped her in the face.

"The victim had a cut inside her lip and complained of shortness of breath," Shoults added. "The battery was witnessed by two children at the residence."

Collins was arrested on charges of domestic battery and domestic battery in the presence of a minor and taken to jail.

Emergency services was not called to the scene and the woman did not seek medical attention.

"Mr. Collins suffered scratches to his abdomen and a bite to his thumb, which were inflicted by the victim while being restrained on the ground and being choked," Shoults added. "He did not seek medical attention."
