Washington Man Arrested After Breaking Into Cannelburg Home

Last updated on Friday, April 8, 2016

(WASHINGTON) - A Washington man is facing two felony counts of residential burglary.

Police arrested 34-year-old Nicholas Orchard Monday night.

According to a probable cause affidavit, police learned of a residential burglary southeast of Cannelburg on March 24. More than $4,600 in property was stolen, including a diamond bracelet, two diamond necklaces, three shotguns, a rifle, a fingerprint-scan pistol safe and a spotting scope.

Authorities believe Orchard entered the home through an unlocked garage door.

The investigation into the burglary eventually led to Dubois, where a resident told police Orchard had left a shotgun at his home that he believed was stolen, because Orchard did not have a job, money or own guns.

Sheriff's department officers went to the Dubois home on March 27 and retrieved the shotgun. The resident at the Cannelburg home told police he was 100 percent certain the Harrington Richardson shotgun was his.

Police received information that Orchard and another man had talked about robbing the Cannelburg home and Orchard was attempting to sell the stolen rifle.

Orchard is also accused of stealing whiskey and 40 to 45 Xanax pills from a relative's home on March 24.
