(PAOLI) - More than a quarter (28.2%) of high school girls and about one in five high school boys (21.8%) say they've been bullied at school.

Those incidents can have an impact that lasts a lifetime for the students who become targets. That's why it's critical to make sure adults and students alike fully understand bullying behavior so they can stop it before it starts.

In hopes of combating bullying, the Indiana Youth Institute (IYI) and IU Health Paoli are hosting an event as part of IYI's Youth Worker Café series to help young people and caring adults understand what bullying is, how it manifests itself and the laws in place to protect victims.

The event is on Thursday, May 5 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Super Burger, 600 West Main Street in Paoli.

Sandy Runkle with Prevent Child Abuse Indiana will speak to attendees about bullying behavior, how to prevent it or intervene, and the characteristics of bullies, their targets and those who witness the bullying. Runkle also will address what policies are in place to address the issue of bullying.

As part of IYI's Youth Worker Café program, the forum and lunch are free, but reservations are required. Please RSVP at If you have trouble with the link, contact IYI Statewide Outreach Manager Debbie Jones at (800) 343-7060 or

Youth Worker Cafés are designed to bring together local youth workers to build relationships and inspire collaborations that will benefit children. This Youth Worker Café is funded in part by Old National Bank Foundation. For more information, contact IYI Southwest Indiana Outreach Manager Joe Shrode at

IYI has free resources available through its Virginia Beall Ball Library on bullying and bullying prevention. Library resources can be accessed in-person at 603 East Washington Street in Indianapolis, through the Data & Library section of or through the Axis 360 app. Resources are available for download or can be mailed out and returned for free.
