(SELLERSBURG) - The Indiana Youth Institute (IYI) is bringing nationally renowned experts to Sellersburg as part of its statewide series of training sessions designed for youth workers, teachers, family service providers and others who work directly with children.

The speakers will educate attendees on how to work with children who've experienced trauma, how to form meaningful relationships with young people and the critical steps to successful fundraising for any organization.

The six-city tour will be in Sellersburg on Wednesday, April 20 in the Horseshoe Foundation Center Community Room in Ogle Hall on the campus of Ivy Tech Community College Sellersburg, 8204 Highway 311. The cost is $20 to attend one session or $40 to attend two sessions. Online registration is open at www.iyi.org/spring2016. Onsite check-in begins 30 minutes before each session.

The two morning sessions are from 9 a.m. to noon and include the following workshops:

"Trauma: Healing the Wounds of our Youth." Psychologist Dr. Donna Gardner is known nationwide for her work with children, especially those who have been through traumatic experiences. Research trends indicate that it is more common than not for children and adolescents to be exposed to several traumatic events in their youth. Dr. Gardner will help attendees learn how to identify the various types of youth trauma and understand the strategies and tools need to help young people and their families work through the trauma.

"Fundraising from Individuals: The Relationship Factor." Aaron Carmichael, Vice President of Development at White's Residential and Family Services, has more than two decades experience in child and adolescent programming, fund development and nonprofit management. He will use that experience to help attendees understand the impact individual relationships have in the fundraising process. Carmichael will speak about the tools and resources needed to confidently build long-lasting relationships that will benefit an organization's funding sustainability.

The two afternoon sessions are from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Those options include:

"Developmental Relationships: Creating Connections That Help Kids Thrive." James Conway is a senior trainer at Search Institute with more than 25 years of experience training youth workers. In this session, attendees will learn how to create close connections with young people that will help them develop the character skills they need to mature into adults. Conway will reveal the five essential actions that categorize these relationships as well as the activities that help kids thrive.

"The Board is Not Your Enemy: A Board Partnership to Raising Revenue." Aaron Carmichael will return in this session to speak about how to engage everyone in the fundraising effort, from the board of directors to the front-line staff. Carmichael will guide attendees through defining board and staff roles and how to set up organizations for fundraising success. Attendees also will learn how to recruit and train board members and staff to be fundraising champions.

In addition to Sellersburg, other training locations include Merrillville on April 13, South Bend on April 14, Fort Wayne on April 15, Evansville on April 19 and Indianapolis on April 21.

These trainings are funded in part by Lilly Endowment Inc., Old National Bank and the Nicholas H. Noyes, Jr. Memorial Foundation, Inc. Additional support for the Ft. Wayne trainings is provided by the English, Bonter, Mitchell Foundation and the Flora Dale Krouse Foundation. Additional support for the Evansville trainings is provided by Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana. Additional support for the Indianapolis trainings is provided by Indiana University Health.

The Indiana Youth Institute promotes the healthy development of Indiana children and youth by serving the people, institutions, and communities that impact their well-being.
