(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana University Police are investigating vandalism that happened sometime between 3:15 a.m. and 3:20 a.m. Friday morning at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity house, at 1115 North Jordan Avenue.

Not only was the fraternity house damaged, but 8 vehicles parked in their parking lot.

Capt. Andy Stephenson says the crimes appear to have been committed by one person.

"The person painted various phrases and symbols, including a swastika and smiley face, on exterior surfaces of the fraternity house and vehicles with black spray paint," Stepenson wrote in an email.

Damage is estimated to be in the range of $5,000 to $10,000.

Although offensive and vulgar phrases and symbols were used in the commission of these crimes, the random nature of these phrases and symbols, the random selection of vehicles in the parking lot, and the diversity of SAE fraternity members indicate that these crimes were not motivated by bias toward any particular person or group.

"Nevertheless, diversity and inclusion are fundamental to the success of Indiana University, and we strive to create a culture of respect among our students, staff, faculty, and administrators. Indiana University does not tolerate
acts of hate or bias, and all members of the IU community are expected to treat others with dignity," Stephenson wrote. "Acts such as this, especially around the important holiday of Passover, are antithetical to our values, and we condemn them.:
