(UNDATED) - Duke Energy to conduct aerial tree trimming in Lawrence and Greene counties.

Duke Energy Indiana plans to rebuild and upgrade a 138-kilovolt power line that runs approximately 31 miles from Bedford to Worthington. The project will help maintain continued reliability of the Duke Energy electric system.

Because this high-voltage line spans several communities and in some places crosses rugged and remote terrain, a specialty contract helicopter tree trimming crew, using an aerial saw, will side-trim trees and vegetation along the power line corridor. The helicopter and aerial saw provide a way to to trim trees in hard-to-reach locations. Where appropriate, ground crews will also use bucket trucks, chippers, mowers and other equipment to help clear the utility easement corridor.

Beginning around April 5, the first 8.5-mile phase of the aerial tree trimming project will start at our Bedford substation near the 2500 block of John A. Williams Blvd., in Lawrence County, and end at our substation in Owensburg near State Road 58. The helicopter crew will then clear the remaining length of the power line corridor from Owensburg to Worthington. It will take approximately two weeks to complete the aerial tree trimming and other vegetation work along the entire 31-mile corridor.

Property owners along the corridor have been notified by mail and by door-to-door contact. All areas where the helicopter will work have been clearly flagged and marked in advance of trimming. Following vegetation clearing, construction on the power line rebuild will begin in April 2016 and will likely take approximately seven months to complete.
