(BEDFORD) - Online summer classes could be offered to Bedford North Lawrence High School students for credit recovery or first-time credit.
According to BNL Principal Dan Dyke the classes will be offered based upon enrollment. An average of 15 students must be enrolled in the class.
The Times Mail reports that online summer classes have been offered for about eight to 10 years, according to Dyke. But students didn't have direct access to a local teacher.
Students will use the PLATO online curriculum. The courses that summer school students would choose from include government, economics, English 10, algebra 1, U.S. history and health.
The proposal calls for BNL teachers to serve as online instructors. Each teacher would be available to assist students for nine hours a week. For six of those hours, the teachers would be on the BNL campus. The other three hours would be offered through online accessibility. The student would be required to meet with the teacher one time each week at the school.
If the board approves the proposal, teachers will complete a six-hour training session on June 1 followed by a six-hour period for class preparation on June 2.
If a family plans to take vacation during the June 3 to July 21 time period they can still enroll in the class.
The Indiana Department of Education would reimburse NLCS summer school instructional hours based upon an average enrollment of 15 students per class.
