Bedford Man Arrested After Breaking Into Garage, Stealing ATV, Tools

Last updated on Thursday, April 7, 2016

(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man was arrested Tuesday after police say he stole an all-terrain vehicle and other items from a garage.

Police arrested 39-year-old Joseph Lake Jr. of Bedford on a warrant for burglary and two counts of theft.

According to a Lawrence County Superior Court II affidavit, on December 7, a man called Bedford Police to report he was driving in Bedford when he noticed a pickup truck hauling a red ATV, a motor hoist and a wood-burning stove and tool boxes, he believed belonged to him. Lake also had items belonging to the accusers father and another man who had items stored in the garage.

The man followed the truck and then stopped and talked to Lake, who was driving the pickup. Lake tried to tell the man the items belonged to someone else, but the man told Lake the items belonged to him. The man also saw a pair of bolt cutters in the truck that the man told police Lake must of used to cut the pad lock of the garage where the items were stored.

The man told Lake to take the items back to his garage. Lake did.

Lake told officers he had no knowledge of the burglary and he did not own the truck.

Officers obtained security footage from Hoosier Hills Credit Union, on Lincoln Avenue that showed Lake hauling the items in the truck. The video also showed the owner of the items following Lake.
