(BEDFORD) - The Indiana State Police Bloomington District has received Trooper Samuel Gillespie, a two year veteran from the Jasper Post, to start his primary patrol assignment in Lawrence County.

Gillespie, a 2009 graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School, attended Danville Area Community College in Illinois, where he played for the men's soccer team and studied Psychology. Gillespie also studied Criminal Justice at Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis.

Upon his completion of the ISP Academy in 2014, Trooper Gillespie was assigned the Jasper District, where he primarily patrolled Orange County.

Trooper Samuel Gillespie is the grandson of Indiana State Police Trooper Robert Gillespie who was killed in the line of duty on June 8, 1962 in Lawrence County near Wesley Chapel while responding to a call for assistance.

Trooper Robert Gillespie had served with the Indiana State Police for nearly 12 years and was assigned to the Seymour post. He was a US Navy veteran serving in the Shore Patrol.

Trooper Gillespie was survived by his wife and six children.

In 1959, he was awarded the agency's Gold Star Award for Valor when, in spite of gunshot wounds, he continued to pursue a couple who had fired shots at him.
