(BLOOMINGTON) - Three people were arrested after police caught them breaking into vehicles on East 19 Street early Wednesday morning.

Police arrested, 18-year-old Jordan Breedlove on charges of theft, resisting law enforcement and unauthorized entry to a vehicle and possession of marijuana and 18-year-old Servonte Gilkie, on charges of theft, resisting law enforcement, unauthorized entry into a vehicle and possession or consumption of alcohol as a minor. Both are being held at the Monroe County Jail.

And a 16-year-old on charges of resisting law enforcement. He was released to his parents on the promise to appear in court.

According to Bloomington Police Department Capt. Steve Kellams officers were called to the area at 2 a.m. after a report of three men looking into cars in the 200 block of East 19th Street and possibly breaking into them.

When the first officer arrived, the three took off running.

Indiana University Police Department officers assisted and helped Bloomington officer set up a perimeter to catch the three men. It took about a half an hour to apprehend them.

Kellams says all three admitted to breaking into the vehicles and taking money and a jacket.

This is not the first time Breedlove has broke into vehicles. He was arrested in December on similar charges.

Kellams says residents and students need to keep vehicles locked and valuables out of site.

In 2015, more than 45 percent of thefts from vehicles took place in cars that were either open or unlocked, Additionally, about 29 percent of reported burglaries occurred in unlocked homes.

"Especially with spring break coming up, people need to remember to lock up their houses and cars,"
he added. "And not to keep windows open. That is just an invitation for a criminal."
