Teacher Invited To Nicaragua To Give 4-Day Math Workshop

Last updated on Wednesday, March 9, 2016

(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington Montessori School Lower Elementary Teacher Jessica Davis is invited over Spring Break to the Little Cobhouse in Matagalpa, Nicaragua to give a 4-day workshop on Montessori math material.

After BMS was contacted by fundraisers for the Little Cobhouse of Matagalpa, Nicaragua, the Lower Elementary classrooms began a new and exciting service project.

Little Cob, as it's known, is an education center supplementing the public school in the barrio of Tule and serving about 30 five-to-eighteen-year-olds. Little Cob helps children with everything from English and math to supplying art opportunities and are particularly interested in finding new ways to help children with math concepts.

Montessori, famous for among other things its hands-on math curriculum, may be the answer. After attending an introductory workshop in one of the BMS classrooms, local volunteer Christine Missik and BMS arranged for Lower Elementary Teacher, Jessica Davis to spend Spring Break in Nicaragua, helping teachers to understand the material and how to use them.

The dream is for teachers to become fully certified with the materials, if it becomes financially feasible. Nicaraguan teachers, parents and non-profit representatives as well as the staff and volunteers of Little Cob, will be attending the workshop on the use of materials.

Davis leaves on Monday, March 14 and plans to share the results and photographs of her experience with her students when she returns. She is hopeful that the Lower Elementary classrooms at BMS will be able to maintain a relationship with Little Cob and continue to support their growth.
