Property Owners Have Until Thursday To Add Claim To Milwaukee Trail Suit

Last updated on Wednesday, March 23, 2016

(BEDFORD) - Property owners in Lawrence County have until Thursday to add their claims for compensation for property taken by the federal government to create the Milwaukee Trail.

The government recently admitted liability and agreed to pay damages.

"Landowners are arguing that the federal government's authorization to create a new easement for a public recreational trail is a taking of property for which the Fifth Amendment requires that the United States pay 'just compensation'," attorney Lindsay Brinton of Washington, D.C., firm Arent Fox LLP. wrote in a press release.

The amount the government has to pay local landowners is not yet decided, but Brinton expects a resolution soon. Anyone who wants to add their claims to the lawsuit should contact Brinton at Lindsay.Brinton@arentfox.com or Hearne at thor@arentfox.com as soon as possible. The statute of limitations expires Friday.
