Murder Suspect In Custody, Investigation Continues

(CANNELTON) - A murder suspect is now in custody.

Police arrested 47-year-old Stacy Matheny at 3:53 p.m. on Monday after a Hancock County Sheriff's Deputy spotted the murder suspect's vehicle on State Road 144 north of Patesville, Kentucky.

The vehicle was stopped at State Road 144, west of Goering Road. Police arrested Matheny without incident. Matheny's father, Earl Matheny, was driving the vehicle, but was not arrested.

A handgun was recovered inside the vehicle.

Matheny was taken to the Hancock County Jail where he is being held on charges from Indiana and Kentucky.

According to Indiana State Police, Matheny drove to a home at 4346 Bell Hollow Road and confronted 47-year-old Phillip Chase. During that altercation, Matheny allegedly pulled out a handgun and fatally shot Chase, who died at the scene. Matheny then fled the scene in a green 2001 Ford Explorer.

ISP then began a manhunt for Matheny.

Matheny is facing charges of murder and charges of a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

The crime remains under investigation.
