Monroe County Solid Waste Management District Announces New Electronics - E Waste Recycling Fee

Last updated on Tuesday, March 22, 2016

(BLOOMINGTON) - Monroe County residents have been able to recycle electronics for free since January 2013 and prior to that in 2010 for just one dollar.

However, beginning April 1, 2016 the Monroe County Solid Waste Management District - the "District" will charge $20 to recycle each TV, computer monitor, laptop computer and other items with a screen.

Executive Director Tom McGlasson Jr. states "The new twenty dollar recycling fee is necessary to offset costs to the District associated with recycling these items. These items will only be accepted at the South Walnut Recycling Center. However, all other electronics will continue to be accepted free of charge at all five recycling centers."

Indiana law currently prohibits items and products defined as electronics waste--"e-waste" from being disposed of through traditional waste disposal methods.

The District reminds the public that to be an environmental steward first, try to repair the electronic item. If the device still works, give the item to someone who can use it, sell it, or donate it to an agency. The District urges all Monroe County residents to be one of the billions of people worldwide who keep electronic waste out of landfills.

The following types of e-waste will still be accepted at all District facilities free of charge: cell phone, microwave oven, fan, radio, telephone, curling iron, hair dryer, power tool, speaker, calculator, computer keyboard, computer mouse, toaster, toaster oven, coffee maker, counter-top appliance, and more.

Monroe County residents can drop off electronics at any rural recycling center on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. or at the Hazardous Materials Facility of the South Walnut Recycling Center located at 3400 South Walnut Street. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday 7:30 a.m. till 5:30 p.m.

Effective April 1, electronic items with a fee will only be accepted at the South Walnut Recycling Center located at 3400 South Walnut Street in Bloomington.
