Meeting To Discuss Southern Indiana Sports, Recreation And Youth Center

Last updated on Tuesday, March 22, 2016

(MITCHELL) - The board of the nonprofit Southern Indiana Sports, Recreation and Youth Center announced, because of a lack of support, it would be forced to stop its attempts to bring the venue to Mitchell.

Chris Blackmore, president of the Southern Indiana Sports, Recreation and Youth Center board, says still believes the center would do amazing things for not only for Mitchell, but surrounding communities including; Bedford, Orleans, Paoli.

A community discussion will take place April 7 at Mitchell City Hall. A professional facilitator will oversee the meeting in order to make it successful and keep it moving in the right direction. It begins at 6:30 p.m.

Blackmore says the facility would have been a place to study, learn, educate, socialize, exercise, eat, play and a safe haven for our youth. SISRYC could have served as a community shelter in the event of an emergency as well.

Plans were for the SISRYC to be an all-ages venue that would serve as a community center and sports complex. The idea originated during a town hall meeting in August 2013. A board of volunteers banded together, obtaining a nonprofit status and working toward securing a location. Funding, however, became an issue the group could not overcome.

"As with anything like this, it will need more than just ideas, but volunteers to support those ideas and make it happen," Blackmore said. "If people really want something, they are going to need to support it either by volunteering or financially."
