(FREETOWN) - Investigators will have to use DNA to determine the identification of a man who died in a house fire early Saturday morning in the Freetown area.
Jackson County Police Department Detective Bob Lucas says that process could take a couple of weeks to complete. He added that police are not releasing the man's name until his identification is confirmed.
Police do not suspect foul play in the death of the man whose body was found inside the home after it burned early Saturday.
Emergency crews were called the house fire northwest of Freetown in the 7100 block of North County Road 765 West at 4:25 a.m.
County Reserve Officer Kevin Settle, Brownstown Reserve Officer Blake McCrary and county Officer Mark Holt were the first to respond. Upon arrival, they reported that the house was engulfed in flames and part of the home had fallen in.
Pershing Township firefighters responded and were assisted by firefighters from Owen Township and Brownstown Fire Department. Most of the fire was extinguished by 6 a.m.
County Officer Bob Lucas, a crime scene investigator, Sheriff Michael Carothers, County Officer Rob Henley and Coroner Roger Wheeler joined the investigation and were assisted by State Fire Marshal Clayton T. Kinder.
Investigators remained at the scene until 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
