(WASHINGTON) - Contract crews working for Vectren Energy Delivery will begin work soon to replace gas mains and service lines in Washington as part of the company's pipeline replacement program.

About 1,300 miles of bare steel and cast iron pipeline infrastructure throughout Indiana are to be replaced with plastic pipes under the multi-year- program.

In Washington, more than one-million dollars will go toward retiring nearly two miles of gas main and more than 150 service lines in 2016.

Since 2008, nearly nine miles have been replaced within the city.

Vectren intends to replace a total of nearly 30 miles in Washington over the next several years.

Streets affected during the projects include: East National Highway, Cosby Street, SE 11th Street, New Street, Center Street, SE 9th Street, Mill Street, SW 5th Street, Donna Lane, Mound Street and SW 3rd Street.
