(MITCHELL) - A Mitchell home was engulfed in flames early Saturday morning.

According to Mitchell Assistance Fire Chief Fred Cassidy, when firefighters arrived at 406 West Warren Street the vacant home was engulfed in flames and there was not much firefighters could do but contain the blaze.

Marion Township Rural Fire Department was called to assist.

Firefighters went into a defensive mode, making sure the home on the east side, owned by a Marion VFD firefighter and the city's bus garage on the west, were not destroyed.

Both neighboring home had damage from to the siding and the city bus garage had some damage to old rafters on the west wall.

Firefighters are not releasing the name of the owner of the destroyed home, pending their investigation. There was no one living in the home and there were no utilities turned on.

Firefighters remained on the scene until 5:30 a.m., but were called back after the ire rekindled and stayed for another three hours.
