(BLOOMFIELD) - A second series of public meetings to discuss the Joint Land Use Study in the area around Naval Support Activity (NSA) Crane are scheduled for later this month.

The Joint Land Use Study is a $200,000 OCRA grant, which was awarded to the Department of Defense last year. It is being used to study NSA Crane's growth compatibility with - Greene, Lawrence, Daviess, Martin and Sullivan counties.

Sullivan County is not a direct neighbor of Crane, but the 450-acre NSA Crane Lake Glendora Test Facility is housed within the county.

According to Matt Crouch with the Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA), the project is tax-funded to help local elected officials and community members that surround the military installations look at compatibility issues and help open lines of communication.

Matrix Design Group, a consulting firm, has been hired to research a list of topics focusing on the compatibility issues.

Crouch says the implementation of Interstate 69 and the anticipated economic development associated with that is what prompted the public meetings.

In the first series of public hearings residents and motorist were able to discuss issues they are facing with the Naval Base.

The second series of meetings will begin on February 22 at WestGate at 6 p.m.. Another meeting will be held on February 23 in Sullivan County and a third meeting in Lawrence County at 6 p.m. on February 24 at the Bedford Chamber of Commerce.

The public will get to hear preliminary results from the last round of discussions, as well as have the opportunity to give input on the higher priority issues.

A third set of meeting will be held later in the year after the plan is developed for community feedback.

The project should wrapped up by December, with a detailed plan presented to each county represented.
