(BLOOMINGTON) - 2015 National Teacher of the Year Shanna Peeples, a Texas high school English teacher and teacher mentor, will speak Friday, February 19, at Indiana University Bloomington.
Peeples will speak from 10 to 11 a.m. in the School of Education Auditorium. She will be introduced by Kathy Nimmer, an English teacher at William Henry Harrison High School near Lafayette, Ind., who was the 2015 Indiana Teacher of the Year and a finalist for National Teacher of the Year. The event is free and open to the public.
Peeples teaches at Palo Duro High School in Amarillo, Texas, where many of her students speak English as a second language and recently entered the United States. She spends half of her day teaching English and the other half mentoring and coaching fellow teachers.
A teacher for 12 years, she worked as a disc jockey, medical assistant, pet sitter and journalist before pursuing education as a career. She has an associate degree from Amarillo College, a Bachelor of Arts degree from West Texas A&M University and a Master of Education degree from the University of Texas at Arlington.
As National Teacher of the Year, she focuses on shaping a national conversation about working with students in poverty and those who have faced extreme challenges.
Begun in 1952, the National Teacher of the Year project is sponsored by the Council of Chief State School Officers to recognize and reward excellence in teaching. National Teachers of the Year are announced each April in a ceremony at the White House.
Nimmer has taught at Harrison High School in the Tippecanoe County School Corp. for 23 years. A National Board Certified Teacher, she earned a bachelor's degree in English education from Trinity Christian College and a Master of Arts in English from Purdue University.
