(MITCHELL) - Two local farmers were honored at the annual Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District meeting this week at Spring Mill State Park Inn.
Receiving the 2015 River Friendly Farmer award was Bryan McClung. He has a combined grain and livestock farming operation. He follows conservation cropping systems including no-till, crop rotation, cover crops and nutrient management and has placed filter strips along the creek and river banks adjacent to farm fields. The strips help filter out unnecessary sediment and nutrition runoff.
He farms a large amount of bottom land and uses exclusion fencing to keep cattle out of the streams and river and the wooded areas on his property.
He also has livestock watering systems placed strategically placed around the property and high-use pads have been employed around his winter feeding areas.
McClung uses rotational grazing to help with the health of his pasture and livestock.
The 2015 Conservation Farmer of the Year is Stan Armstrong, of Springville.
Armstrong began working with NRCS and Lawrence County SWCD many years ago and served as a past board member of SWCD. He has participated in the Environmental Quality Incentive Program, the Conservation Stewardship Program and other programs.
He participates in conservation programs include: forage and biomass plantings, cover crops, forest stand improvement, nutrient management, water wells, pumping plant, fencing, access control, spring development and access roads.
Also honored was Autumn Greer, who was the 2015 Soil and Water Conservation project champion at the Lawrence County 4-H Fair.
