(JASPER) - A Loogootee man told police he was driving recklessly because he was attempting to get his passenger, who was having a medical issue, to the hospital.

The man was stopped after Jasper police received several calls around 2 p.m. Monday about a driver in a 2016 Hyundai Accent motorist who had activated their hazard lights and was passing vehicles in a reckless manner while traveling northbound on U.S. 231

Officers stopped the car at 6th and Dorbett streets in Jasper.

The driver, 37-year-old Shane Fellers, of Church Street in Loogootee, told police his passenger was having a medical emergency and he was rushing to get her to Memorial Hospital.

Officers allowed the vehicle to continue to the Hospital. According to police, a female passenger was admitted for treatment.

While at the hospital, officers determined that Fellers' license was suspended.

Officers then had Canine Ares walk around the car. Ares indicated there were possible drugs inside the Hyundai.

Officers searched the car and found three grams of crystal meth, used syringes, drug paraphernalia, and Carixotrodol, a Schedule IV controlled substance.

Fellers was arrested and taken to the Dubios County Security Center on charges of dealing meth, possession of meth, possession of hypodermic needles, possession of controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also cited for driving while his driver's license was suspended.
