(UNDATED) - A statewide effort to reduce wrecks at intersections with traffic signals along state and federal highways will begin this spring in Bloomington, Seymour and Greenwood.
The stoplights will be more visible and allow motorists to react to the traffic signal sooner, traffic experts say.
Beginning in May, the Indiana Department of Transportation will start installing 364 stoplights in the three cities with a black back plate and a rectangular reflective border.
According to the release, the changes will occur in mid-May.
The old units will be removed and replaced with new signal heads. They will be installed along U.S. Highway 31 at Greenwood, U.S. 50 at Seymour and State Road 46 at Bloomington, according to INDOT.
The new units will improve visibility and has a special border to alert drivers of its existence in the event of a power outage.
According to a Federal Highway Administration study, after installation of the new signal head, there was a crash reduction of 28.6 percent. There was also a 36.7 percent reduction of personal injury crashes.
The state will pay just under $300,000 and hope to complete the project by July 31.
Spokesman Harry Maginity says motorists will experience minimal traffic issues during the changeovers in the cities.
