Fire Destroys Schwenk Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning Shop

Last updated on Wednesday, February 17, 2016

(IRELAND) - A fire destroyed the Schwenk Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning shop at 4720 West 500 North, in Ireland, Tuesday morning.

According to Ireland Volunteer Fire Department Chief Stan Siefert, the 42-by-70 building is owned by Roger Schwenk.

Roger had been in the shop about an hour and then left to run errands. A business partner discovered the fire about an hour later and called police at 11:24 a.m.

When firefighters arrived the building was engulfed in flames. Firefighters say the fire started in the southeast portion of the building and spread. The State Fire Marshal is investigating what ignited the blaze.

Firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading into the office area and to Schwenk's home which is located about 15 feet from the shop.

JOJ Sander supplied a backhoe to pull the burned shell of the building's walls apart.

The building and the inventory were destroyed along with a John Deere tractor with front-end loader, an older tractor and another trencher backhoe.

Firefighters from Jefferson Township and Haysville Volunteer Fire Departments assisted.

Firefighters were on scene for three and a half hours.
