(ORLEANS) - Firefighters from six volunteer fire departments battled a huge house fire at 220 West Jefferson Street in Orleans this morning.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at 2:26 a.m.

Orleans VFD was the first on the scene and reported flames were shooting out of the back of the house built in the late 1800s historical home.

They quickly called in firefighters from Rural District 2, Paoli, Lavoina and Marion Township to assist.

Norman "Red" Cundiff, safety officer and assistant administrator with the Orleans fire department, says 33 firefighters with 10 trucks responded.

No one was living in the home owned by Sam and Nancy Walker of Limon, Colo.

The Walkers bought the house a few years ago and were remodeling it. The home was fully furnished.

"They would stay in the home when they came to Orleans to visit," Cundiff added.

Cundiff believes the fire started in the area of a kitchen and bathroom on the north side of the house.

Most of the firefighters cleared the scene just after 6 a.m., however Orleans firefighters remained putting out hot spots and waiting for the state fire marshal to arrive.
