(BEDFORD) - A Bedford home was destroyed Sunday afternoon in the 3200 block of Pumphouse Road.

Bedford Fire Department firefighters were called by the occupants, Todd and Jennifer Allen, about a possible chimney fire at 1:51 p.m.

Firefighers responded with three fire engines and the rescue truck.

"Off duty firefighters were then called in to help battle the blaze," says First Shift Battalion Chief John Dixon, who was one of the off-duty firefighters called in. "We were called in because the home was located down a long narrow gravel road and it was difficult to get to."

Firefighters not only battled the flames, but treacherous weather conditions and the lack of water at the location.

"A downed power line also hampered our efforts," Dixon added.

The Duke Energy power line, brought down by the fire, landed on one of the department's attack lines.

"Duke had to deactivate the line," Dixon says. "Because of the live downed line it limited us from attacking the fire from that area until Duke arrived and turn the power off."

Dixon says the fire started in the basement area of the home.

"It then spread to the upper two levels," he added. "The home was a total loss."

Firefighters are still on the scene this morning.

"We had a crew there all night battling hot spots," Dixon says. "They are still there monitoring the situation and assisting our fire inspector who is there investigating what started the blaze."

No one suffered serious injuries.

"The occupants were out of the home when firefighters arrived," Dixon added. "We did have one firefighter that had an incident and was given oxygen at one point."

Firefighters were assisted by Bedford Police Department, Bedford City Utilities, Bedford Street Department, Duke Energy and an IU Health Hospital ambulance crew.
