(CAMBY) - A Camby man has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly attempting to kill his pregnant girlfriend and their unborn child.

Police arrested 23-year-old Garrett A. Carpenter on charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery, battery with bodily injury to a pregnant woman, two counts of battery by means of deadly weapon and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.

Carpenter appeared in Morgan County Superior Court II on Wednesday afternoon. He is being held on $100,000 property/surety bond and $10,000 cash bond. Due to him being on probation from another case when he was charged in this case, Judge Christopher Burnham put a 15 day hold on his release.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Carpenter and his girlfriend got into an argument at their rental home on Hadley Road on February 8.

The woman told Morgan County Sheriff's Department detectives that Carpenter had been using meth and heroin before she was allegedly attacked. She said he kept saying "the baby was evil and was a mistake."

According to police, Carpenter tried to use a machete to cut her, but she was able to get it away. He then allegedly used a box cutter to cut her.

The woman told police she felt Carpenter was not trying to kill her, only the baby.

Several people who also live in the home were able to pull Carpenter off of the woman and keep him confined until police arrived.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital for treatment.

Carpenter was arrested later that day and taken to the Morgan County Jail. Carpenter later became ill while at the jail and was taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
