BUEA Donates 2.5 Acres Of Land To City Of Bedford

Last updated on Tuesday, February 23, 2016

(BEDFORD) - Last week the Bedford Urban Enterprise Association voted to gift 2.5 acres of land at the corner of Fifth and H street to the city.

Local Master Gardeners would like to develop the plot as a second community garden.

The parks department currently oversees a community garden on 22nd Street just east of Mitchell Road. Since 2008, local residents have cultivated garden vegetables and flowers on assigned plots at that site.

The Times Mail reported that the board briefly discussed the option of leasing the property to the city for $1 to keep it available for economic development. However, the property has been on the market for many years and no one has come forward to purchase for the listed price of $99,000.

BUEA has been paying a contractor more than $2,500 a year for maintenance of the grounds, now the city will assume that responsibility.
