Last updated on Wednesday, February 24, 2016

(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington woman is dead after the vehicle she was in crashed into a tree Monday night and police still have unanswered questions.

According to a Monroe County Sheriff's Department report, 33-year-old Rebecca Crozier died at the scene of the crash in the 4100 block of Hartstrait Road.

Another individual in the vehicle, 22-year-old Herschel Lee Sparks, also of Bloomington, suffered a broken hip and was first taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital and later flown by helicopter to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Ellettsville Deputy Chief William Humphrey called the Monroe County Sheriff's Department after driving upon the crash scene at 7:51 p.m.

He told investigators he had been traveling south on Hartstrait Road when a 2004 Nissan Altima traveling north passed him at a high-rate of speed.

Hartstrait turned his vehicle around and followed the car in an attempt to stop it. But a short distance later, he drove upon the crash site.

The car had crashed into a tree which then fell into the roadway.

Police found Crozer and Sparks out of the car. Police are not sure if they were ejected from the vehicle or exited after the crash. Police are also still working to determine who was the driver and who was the passenger.

Members of the Indiana State Police, Ellettsville Fire Department, IU Health Ambulance Service and Monroe County Coroner's Office assisted at the scene of the crash.
